Behavioural medicine
Behavioral problems in animals are among the leading causes for owners to relinquish their pets. Behavioural problems such as aggressive behaviour and fear often result in a poorer bond between pets and people. Our practice specialised in behavioural medicine is dedicated to addressing these challenges and to restore the bond between owners and their pets.

Personalized
veterinary behavioural care
At Vet Ethology, behavioural medicine is a specialisation that focuses on understanding and assessing animal behaviour. We combine this specific knowledge with our veterinary expertise to analyse and address behavioural problems in your animal.
Behavioural medicine not only resolves behavioural problems, but also prevents them. Through our insights into the natural behaviour of various animal species and their adaptation to life as pets, you can collaborate with our veterinarians to create an environment tailored to your pet's individual needs, promoting a happier and healthier life.
Vet Ethology addresses a range of behavioural problems in horses, dogs, cats and exotics. In horses, we address aggressive behaviour, fear, repetitive behaviour and training challenges among others. For dogs, our focus includes aggressive behaviour, fear, house soiling, repetitive behaviour and training issues. Cats receive support for aggressive behaviour, fear, housesoiling and/or spraying. We also offer help to exotics that struggle with behavioural problems.
At Vet Ethology, we treat each animal in a unique and individual manner, tailored to the specific needs and characteristics of your pet, to ensure optimal behavioral care.

Our approach
Step 1
First consultation
General information
Consultations can be requested either by you yourself or upon referral by another veterinarian. In the case of referrals, we collaborate closely with the referring vet. For an initial behavioural consultation at Vet Ethology, 1 hour and 30 minutes is allocated, and includes:
- a preliminary analysis based on the questionnaires and videos below
- a diagnosis
- a comprehensive treatment plan
- a report
Why?
During our initial consultation, we carefully examine your pet's behavior and address any concerns you may have. By gaining insight into your pet's individual needs and routines, a treatment plan can be tailored to improve your pet's welfare.
What can you expect?
During the initial consultation, the behavioral veterinarian will analyse the causes of your animal's behavior, ask pertinent questions, and provide advice on potential treatments. Following the consultation, you will receive a report with recommendations for next steps, empowering you to begin treatment with informed decisions and practical tools.
Do you live in the wider Ghent region?
Then, book your initial consultation at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Ghent University (Belgium). To schedule an appointment, please contact the secretariat at (+32) 09/264 77 00. (You can also complete the form on the first consultation page.)
Starting training for puppies, dogs or horses without prior behavioural consultation?
Please send us an email at info@vetethology.be. Our behavioral veterinarian will then assist you in determining whether direct training is suitable or if a behavioral consultation with a more thorough analysis of your animal's behavior is advisable.
Ready for the first consultation?
You made an appointment for an initial consultation? Thank you, we are grateful for the trust you've shown us.To ensure thorough preparation for this consultation, we kindly request that you complete the questionnaire below and submit videos of your animal's behaviour in advance.
Step 2
Possible follow-up consultations and/or individual training sessions
Follow-up consultation
Follow-up consultations are often necessary for progress in your animal's behaviour. These consultations last 45 minutes per consultation. To ensure effective follow-up, we kindly request that you share relevant information and any changes in your animal's behaviour with us in advance.
Individual training sessions
In some situations, treatment may be accompanied by a training programme. We prefer individual training sessions based on a personal training programme to achieve specific behavioural goals. The rates and duration of individual training sessions vary depending on your animal's needs and are discussed during the initial consultation.
No follow-up after the 1st consultation?
Sometimes, no further follow-up may be necessary after the initial consultation. If your animal's behavioural problem has been successfully resolved during the first session, no automatic follow-up consultation will be scheduled. However, we recommend contacting us whenever new questions or concerns arise.
